Frequently Asked Questions
Physical therapy (PT) is a healthcare specialty focused on improving movement, reducing pain, restoring function, and preventing injury. A licensed physical therapist evaluates how your body moves, identifies limitations or dysfunctions, and develops a personalized treatment plan using targeted exercises, hands-on therapy, education, and modalities to help you heal and move better.
In many states, direct access allows patients to see a physical therapist without a physician referral. However, some insurance plans still require a referral for coverage. It’s best to check with both your insurance provider and the physical therapy clinic before your first visit.
Physical therapy treats a wide range of conditions, including:
Back, neck, and joint pain
Sports and work-related injuries
Post-surgical rehabilitation
Arthritis and chronic pain
Balance and fall prevention issues
Neurological conditions (e.g., stroke recovery)
Mobility issues due to aging or injury
Your first visit typically includes:
A review of your medical history and symptoms
A movement and functional assessment
Strength, flexibility, posture, and balance testing
Discussion of goals and expectations
Creation of a customized treatment plan
You may also begin light treatment or exercises during this initial appointment.
Physical therapy should not cause sharp or severe pain, but some discomfort or soreness can occur as your body adapts and heals. Therapists work within your tolerance and adjust treatment as needed. Open communication ensures therapy remains safe and effective.
The duration of therapy depends on your condition, goals, and consistency. Some patients improve in a few sessions, while others may need several weeks of care. Most treatment plans involve 1–3 visits per week combined with a home exercise program for best results.
